I figured that today was a great day to give you my take on how the affiliate marketing world has changed in the past few years. When I started around 6 or 7 years ago things were completely different than they are today. As a new affiliate entering the world of affiliate marketing in today’s game there are a few things that are very important for you to take note of…
1. You ARE required to have some “base” knowledge in order to get approved at affiliate networks. A few years ago networks accepted just about every application that came through the door. Now that affiliate marketing has really caught on more and more people are doing it… which means less and less justification for just “accepting anyone”. So get yourself a base knowledge BEFORE you apply to an affiliate network.
2. Make sure you stay up to date on the advertising platforms. This means there isn’t really this “set it up and forget it” mentality like there use to be. Facebook makes changes it seems like almost every week to their advertising platform. Google has completely changed their take on affiliate marketing in the last year alone. Yahoo/Bing are now combining to create one platform for advertising rather than two different ones. The lesson here is you must stay on top of the game in order to be successful. Things are changing and this industry is being altered on what seems like a daily basis.
3. Understand that you are responsible for the things you post online. A few years ago you could write and say just about anything and everything you want. Now you simply can’t do that so when designing your landing pages design for success WITHOUT using images of celebrities and well known people. This to me is really just “common sense” but then again so are a lot of things, right? Just make sure you always keep this in mind.
4. Many affiliate offers are now competing with other offers similar to theirs. What this means is increased demand and increased payouts to you the affiliate. Now that there are tons of “diet pill” offers and ridiculous amounts of “dating” offers it makes it much easier for affiliates to pick and choose what they want to promote. Companies are now competing for you which means you can get increased payouts.
These are just some of the things I have seen change in the industry over the past few years. One thing I am certain of is that it will continue to change over the next few years. What really determines your personal success is your dedication to making sure you educate yourself and stay on top of everything that’s changing so you can adapt and continue building your business.
