How to Choose a Niche Site

One of the top tools for an Affiliate Marketer is their niche site.  If you do not have one yet, you should really consider creating one today.  Niche sites are a great way to increase monthly revenue and promote products.  A well marketed niche site gives you the opportunity to focus your attention and rapidly gain expert status in the community.

What is a Niche Site

Before you can create a niche site, you need to understand what it is.  A niche site is a highly targeted market.  A niche site lets you take a topic, such as pets, and break it down until you get a very specific market.  Let’s go over an example.  Say you want to create a site about pets.  This is a very broad topic that can encompass all pets, supplies, training and information.  This site would be hard to rank because there are so many blogs on pets.  With a niche site, you will narrow down your focus.  You can create a site that focuses on dogs.  This is still a very popular topic so you may have a hard time getting traffic to your site.  You then narrow down it more.  You can create a niche site on dog training, dog treat recipes or clothes for your dogs.  Any of these would be a good niche site topic.

Brainstorm for Ideas

Your first step when choosing a topic for your niche site is to brainstorm.  Make a list of topics that interest you.  Write down everything that you find interesting.  Do not edit your list.  After you brainstorm, you will have a long list of topics.  You want a large list because in your next step, you will take you list and see which topics are being searched for.

After you have a list, break down each topic into subcategories.  If you are interested in basketball, a sub-category could be playing basketball.  You can then take your sub-category and break it down further.  A good example is jump shots.  You will then take this list and search for popularity.

Research Popularity

Now that you have a list of your interests, it is time to narrow down your options further.  The best way to do this is to take your list and search for keywords.  You want to look at the search volume of each topic.  I find adwords.google.com is the most comprehensive tool to find the popularity of a topic.  Type each topic and sub-topic into the search engine and check the statistics.

I will use the pet example from above.  When I check the statistics for pets, dogs, and dog treat recipes, I get the following results:

  • Pets: 13,600,000 unique searches
  • Dogs: 45,500,000 unique searches
  • Dog treat recipes: 40,500 unique searches

As you can see, pets and dogs have an extremely large search volume while dog treat recipes has manageable results.  You will have a better chance of higher search listing if you choose this topic.

Check for Products

Now that you have your topics picked, you want to find products related to the topic.  This step is simple.  You will want to sign onto Clickbank and search for your topic.  When I search for tog treat recipes, I find several products that are on target for my site.  Look at the conversions, profits and buyer reputation and choose products that you can market.

Niche markets are highly popular in Affiliate Marketing.  Before you can even begin to build a site and make sales, you need to make sure that customers want your products.  Follow these simple steps and you will have a manageable site that can easily convert and keep reader’s attention.

    I have a blog started Anthony, but pinpointing a niche is hard. I have several things I have a passion about, such as getting out of debt, marketing online, earning extra income, just to name a few. I would honestly like to ask you some more questions through email. I want to get into affiliate marketing, but I admit I feel like I should try a product for myself before I write a review and begin promoting it. Right now I am only promoting one product on my blog.

    This is a really good clarification and illustration for a new strategy in creating campaigns through Affiliate marketing websites,e.g. Clickbank.

    One other problem that I am having is getting my password and email on joining the Live! Community in order to obtain the 70 page book or lengthy article you wrote on accessing and using Google adwords.google.com.

    Great information Anthony !! I finally understand what u are talking about. My first site was a music site….but was sooo broad and hard to market.. I still have the site but have narrowed it down more.

    My second site is Niche Specific. About Cocktail Drums ONLY. I was able to tap into that market, and as a result I am being endorsed by a Cocktail Drum company 🙂 Just received them the other day and I now plan to make a Youtube video in which I can talk about cocktail drums….then do a demo of me playing them. Hopefully this will cause more traffic to be filtered to my site….. I leave for a 2 month tour with a hip hop artist and I am hoping that my site will gain popularity while I’m on the road. I also found some Clickbank “How to Play Drums” type ebooks to market on the site. I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER now that I have a niche market. 🙂

    I agree with Billy G. who wrote on 2/15 you are a special person in this world. I’m at it again truing to buckle down and focus on getting to where I have a niche and traffic to my sight to get PAID! I have a lot of homework to do yet.

    I created my domain name but my son thinks, I should not use my own name in it. I agree and I believe I let it stop me from taking any more steps until today. I’m at it again, so I need to find a niche and a domain name that fits. Internet Marketing is my main interest but Nutrition/Organic food products is one I’m personally interested in for myself right now.
